A Guide to a Bug-Free Summer

Summer is here, and unfortunately that means bugs are too. Insect bites are a pain in and of themselves, but let those pests set up camp outside your home and you’ve got an even bigger problem. Fret not, though, because if you follow these instructions, you might just be able to enjoy a bug-free summer.

For General Protection:

Mosquitoes, ants, wasps, hornets, bees, and even killer bees can become huge problems for homeowners, especially those with children. The last thing you want is for you or your child to suffer a nasty bug bite, so be sure to use repellent when need-be (also, remember to use a low-concentration spray for children).

It also helps to wear smooth, light-colored clothes (as opposed to rough-textured, bright clothing) that cover your body and to avoid wearing scented hair products, perfume, and scented lotions or aftershave. While these measures can protect you from bugs that are already around, there are also measures you can take to prevent these pests from setting up in your yard in the first place.

For Hives (Bees, Hornets, Wasps):

Anyone who has suffered a bee sting, wasp sting, or hornet sting can tell you just how unpleasant they are. Unfortunately, if there’s already a hive in your yard, you’ll need to remove it carefully. This can be done in a few ways, but each method requires that you wear protective clothing (gloves, long sleeves, netting, etc.). If you’re allergic to any of these pests, it’s a good idea to have a professional remove the hive.

Once you have all other hives removed, you can begin taking steps to ensure the bugs don’t move back in. Bushes provide perfect locations for hives, and short of removing the bushes entirely, there’s no good way to stop another hive from forming.

You can, however, prevent hives from forming in cracks by filling them in with some type of sealant. Look under eaves and awnings as well. Vents and the downspouts of gutters are also prime real estate for these critters, so cover them with a screen to further prevent hives from forming there.

For Anthills:

To rid your yard entirely of anthills will most likely require you to destroy existing anthills. This can be done with a large number of pesticides or home remedies. One of the most effective home remedies is pouring boiling water down exterior anthills.

Several plants can help with the prevention of anthills forming in the first place. Planting mint around your home, especially in areas that you’ve seen ants, can be particularly effective. Lavender, basil, eucalyptus, chili peppers, thyme, and rosemary will also work.
